October 4 Meeting Notes

Great appreciation was expressed to Sandy Wells for making arrangements with Pizza Hut to host our lunch meeting. Many thanks to the Pizza Hut manager as well. Pizza Hut will be noted as a Vision 2020 supporter.

A letter to the East Tennessee Foundation and a proposed budget were discussed.

A request to send the letter and proposed budget to the East Tennessee Foundation was unanimously approved by those present. This will allow the foundation to consider the request that they adopt Vision 2020 as a special project serving as the fiscal agent and assuring financial integrity. Once the board of the East Tennessee Foundation approves Vision 2020 as a special project, the initiative can then begin accepting funds for program operations.

The proposed budget was discussed as being a reasonable expectation for Vision 2020 operations in the first year. Acknowledging that there will likely be amendments to the budget as necessary in the future, it was agreed the document in hand was a viable budgetary framework on which to build.

A model for a proposed Vision 2020 Community Survey was presented. The survey was adapted to Campbell County from a similar one conducted in Montgomery County, Tennessee. Suggestions were made to improve the survey and during the next several upcoming meetings the survey will evolve into the document needed to collect ideas, data and other information from Campbell County citizens related to building the Vision 2020 Strategic Plan.

Suggestions on how to improve the survey are welcomed. Comments can be posted on the Vision 2020 website at www.campbellcountyvision2020.com. (after registration)

A copy of the Op-ed printed in the Sunday in the Perspective Section of the 30 September 2007 Knoxville News Sentinel entitled "Campbell residents, businesses, community groups unite on a vision," was distributed. The piece was written by one of Vision 2020's facilitators, Fred Cole.

The next meeting of the Vision 2020 Partnership was scheduled for Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Jacksboro. The meeting will be a 12-noon luncheon. It is important that all those interested in participating in Vision 2020 leadership roles come to this meeting. Members of the Vision 2020 Steering Committee will be chosen as well as a chairperson and vice-chairperson.  All Vision 2020 supporters are encouraged to attend. What is Vision 2020?

A 12-year strategic plan for Campbell County - 2008 to 2020

Vision 2020 is a community-based effort to create a plan for improving and directing the future of Campbell County. Vision 2020 will be based upon ideas collected at public meetings from citizens of Campbell County. Those ideas will then be refined into specific strategies that will be implemented over the 12 year life of the strategic plan.

Vision 2020 will have a comprehensive, systemic focus in numerous areas that have a direct impact on quality of life in our county. Some plans will build on assets and resources Campbell County already has. Other plans will involve creating citizen councils and task forces to work with local government.

There is no guarantee all plans will be successful. Vision 2020 only guarantees there will be a strong commitment to a concerted effort to define where we are and what we want to be as a county in the future. Vision 2020 will summon forth a new spirit of citizen entrepreneurship and rally our best efforts to make life better for all of us now and for those who come in succeeding generations.

A New Era

A New Era of Citizen Entrepreneurship

Campbell County is blessed with tremendous beauty and natural resources but its most valuable asset is the people who live in this community. We are people rich with ideas and resources needed to create the county we collectively decide we want to have come the year 2020. But we have to make it happen. If Vision 2020 doesn’t come to life it won’t be because we couldn’t do it but because we choose not to.

For Vision 2020 to be a viable plan for our future the community must have ownership. The strategy must evolve from a web of alliances and partnerships focused on the common goal of improving quality of life in Campbell County. Vision 2020 is a call to action. This is the time to rally our slumbering sense of duty and responsibility to take charge of our own destiny and create a county we can be proud to call home, to have folks visit and to pass along to the people we care about most.

We need you. Come join with us!
